Wonder boy Nurse blasts way to final

The Barbados Road Tennis Open Saturday night’s finals will see two perpetual opponents, Kim Holder and Sheldene Walrond, clashing again while the men’s battle for the $20 000 will see a new kid on the block, Shakeem Nurse, taking on No.1 Mark “Venom” Griffith.

Those finalists were decided in four contrasting matches played on Tuesday night on a spanking new court in the Wildey Gymnasium with about 2 500 fans enjoying the exchanges.

Holder lit the fuse with a close 25-23, 19-21, 21-16 win over Rachel Smith but it was 17-year-old Nurse who provided the explosions with a sublime victory over Dario Hinds 21-7, 21-11, 21-11.

Walrond, who enjoyed another birthday on Monday, surprisingly took three games to dismiss a very nervous Maudlyn Blunt 21-12, 17-21, 21-10 which gave the DJ a chance to play Lil Rick’s Happy Birthday. (KB)
