COVID-19 update for August 15

Health authorities in Barbados reported on Tuesday that six more people, most of them elderly, died from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) between Saturday and Monday, and another 431 new COVID-19 cases were detected on Monday.

According to a media release issued through the Barbados Government Information Service, an 86-year-old man on Saturday; a 52-year-old man and a 98-year-old woman on Sunday; and a 95-year-old woman and two men, aged 73 and 85 respectively, on Monday died from the viral illness.

Their deaths increase the number of COVID-19 related deaths to 525 at August 15.

At the same time, health authorities indicated 198 males and 233 females tested positive for the viral illness out of the 1 201 tests conducted by the Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory.

The cases comprised 61 young people under the age of 18, and the remainder were adults aged 18 years and older.

The number of people in government isolation facilities was 70, while 3 731 peple were in home isolation.

The number of people that have been administered at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine is 163 069 (71.4 per cent of the eligible population) under the national vaccination programme.

The total number of fully vaccinated people is 154 186 (56.9 per cent of the total population or 67.5 per cent of the eligible population).

The eligible population represents anyone 12 years and older.
