The Democratic Labour Party wants to know how much Prime Minister Mia Mottley’s trips are costing the taxpayers of Barbados and what benefits they can expect from them.

Vice-president Paul Gibson, who was speaking on Starcom Network’s Down To Brasstacks on Monday, also expressed concern about the large contingents accompanying Mottley.

“The question is, what value we are getting back from some of these trips? We would like to know the cost and the value of going to Egypt and going to Rwanda, taking these large delegations. In the context of a very tough economic time in Barbados, we need to know what benefits we are deriving from some of these trips,” he said.

“It is our contention that the need for accountability and transparency in respect to the level of travel and the cost of travel that the Prime Minister is engaging in, needs to be highlighted and be known by the people of Barbados. The frequency of travel and the lengthy durations of these trips is something that we all should be concerned about. We believe that there is a cost to flights, hotels, food and accommodation and it is the taxpayers who are footing the bill.”

Mottley also delivered the 20th annual Nelson Mandela Lecture in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and is due back home today. (Nation News)
