Suspension not the answer

Chief executive officer of Supreme Counselling for Personal Development, Shawn Clarke, does not favour suspension from school as a disciplinary measure for children.

“Why is it that we are putting young people out of the school system at 16 and 17 and some of them cannot spell or write their names?” he asked.

“I am not an advocate for suspension. I believe that suspending a child is like sending the child home for a little vacation to do what he or she wants to do, enjoy life, get involved in the wrong company, go back to school do the same thing and by the afternoon they’re back home again,” he said.

He was speaking at the Hilton Barbados yesterday during a parenting seminar entitled The Parenting Puzzle: Putting It All Together.  (Nation News)
