India Under-19 Women were sent crashing back to earth in their first Super 6 match in the ICC’s Women’s U19 T20 World Cup when they lost by seven wickets to Australia Under-19 Women on Saturday at the Senwes Cricket Stadium in South Africa.

After blowing away South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Scotland in the group stage, India U19 got a thrashing of their own when they were skittled out for 87 runs in 18.5 overs. Australia U19 chased down the target with ease, reaching 88-3 with 37 balls remaining.

In a match-up many punters predict would be the competition’s final, India were sent into bat and lost captain and full international Shefali Verma in the second over to the bowling of Milly Illingworth when skipper Rhys Mckenna took a stunning catch at cover.

The side never recovered, as the middle order was exposed to the Australia fast bowlers, and responded with a series of single digit scores. Eight of the ten wickets fell to the seamers including six of the top seven batters as Illingworth, Sianna Ginger and fifteen-year-old Maggie Clark ran riot.

Leading the resistance was opener Shweta Sehrawat who scored 21 runs amidst the carnage. A recovery of sorts looked on when lower order batters Hrishita Basu and Titas Sadhu got together but both fell before they could mount anything significant.

Confidence was high in the Australian camp during the start of the chase but it subsided when they fell from 27-0 to 39-3 in the powerplay. Openers Kate Pelle and Sianna Ginger looked to be positive from the onset, sending multiple deliveries from Mannat Kashyap and Titas Sadhu to the fence but eventually held out to fielders in the inner ring. Claire Moore and Amy Smith came together in the sixth over and calmed things down with some steady batting and rotation of strike. Their unbeaten partnership of 51 runs ensured victory and sent India back to the drawing board.

India U19 Women face Sri Lanka on Sunday, while Australia U19 face United Arab Emirates U19 Women on Monday.
