Death in police cell ruled suicide

Article by Heather-Lynn Evanson

More than a year after the family of Colin McDonald Greene, who died in a cell at Holetown Police Station in November 2021, called for answers, a coroner has ruled he died by his own hand.

However, the senior lawman who investigated Greene’s death has suggested that video and audio equipment be placed in cells so that prisoners could be continuously monitored.

Greene, 43, of Chalky Mount, St Andrew, had turned himself into police at Holetown after he was involved in an altercation with a man in October that same year.

He had, however, tested positive for COVID-19 and was taken to the Blackman and Gollop facility in Christ Church for treatment. From there he was sent to the Savannah Hotel, also in Christ Church, before he was released into the custody of lawmen at the nearby Worthing Police Station on November 12, 2021. He was then transferred to the Holetown Station where he was placed in a cell. (HLE)
