NUPW also happy for LIAT workers

The National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) is calling the settlement for former Barbadian workers of LIAT airline a success story.

“For several years the NUPW has been making representation for the LIAT pilots. We had the issue where the host country of LIAT, Antigua, had passed legislation that when they go into insolvency, severance would not be an obligation and this really disadvantaged many workers,” said deputy general secretary Wayne Walrond yesterday after the annual service at St Matthias’ Anglican Church.

“We’ve met with the Antigua prime minister virtually to appeal the hardships of these pilots so we are very happy that, after vigorous representation, we can see the success of this Government, similar to St Lucia, agreeing to grant them severance payments which brings some level of closure to the situation.”

Last week during the wrap-up to the Budget debate, Prime Minister Mottley announced approximately $10 million had been reserved in cash and bonds for about 89 former workers.

The Barbados Workers’ Union has also expressed satisfaction with the decision by Government. (Nation News)
