If former bank employee Caleb Daniel Richard Alfonso Cooke does not pay $20 000 by the next four months, he will have to spend 15 months in prison.
The fine came alongside two years’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, after he had pleaded guilty back in March to stealing $34 802.04 from the former Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago (RBTT) Barbados Ltd. on September 3, 2010.
Justice Wanda Blair handed down the sentence last Friday in the No. 4A Supreme Court. Senior State Counsel Olivia Davis and acting Senior State Counsel Joyann Catwell appeared on behalf of the prosecution, while Safiya Moore was Cooke’s attorney.
Cooke, 37, of No. 2 Holders Hill, St James, was a customer service representative and part of his duties involved calculating withholding taxes and forwarding it to the Inland Revenue Authority. Instead of doing so, he deposited the money into his own credit union account via a manager’s cheque. (SD)
