Secretary general of the Caribbean Telecommunications Unit (CTU) Rodney Taylor says they are still aiming for complete elimination of roaming charges within the Caribbean.
Speaking during the launch of a Cable & Wireless (C&W) Communications initiative that will see Internet broadband connection being provided to low-income households in Barbados and some other Caribbean countries, he said: “I am sure PM (Mia Amor) Mottley will want me to emphasise that our goal is still the full and complete elimination of roaming within the region and we continue to work towards that.”
Last year, former Grenada prime minister Dr Keith Mitchell signed the St George’s Declaration Towards A Reduction Of Intra-Caribbean Roaming Charges with telecom providers C&W Communications and Digicel in Grenada. Addressing that same signing ceremony via Zoom for the roll-out of new roaming rate packages in the region, Prime Minister Mottley pointed out she had been making the call for easy digital connectivity for more than a decade and to follow the example of Europe in eliminating roaming charges.
Yesterday, Taylor stressed that the CTU “continues to work for complete elimination of the roaming charges”. (GC)
