The Guyana Amazon Warriors will be competing in the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final on Sunday after they comfortably beat Jamaica Tallawahs by 81 runs last night in Qualifier Two .
Tallawahs captain Brandon King won the toss and opted to field first at the Providence Stadium, keeping the Amazon Warriors to 182-6. In reply the Tallawahs collapsed to 101 all out in 15.2 overs as their chase never really got going.
The hosts had a decent Powerplay score, reaching 49-1 at the end of the six overs with Kevlon Anderson (4) the man to be dismissed. That wicket brought the competition’s top run scorer Shai Hope to the crease. His 38 run partnership with Hetmyer lacked pyrotechnics but allowed the Warriors to set a base for big hitting later on. Hope fell on 40 runs trying to smash one over the long on boundary for the second game running, which brought Azam Khan to the crease. His score of 54 runs,which includes five boundaries and four sixes at the back end of the Guyana innings propelled them to a really competitive score of 182-6.
Tallawahs lost four wickets in the powerplay for just 32 runs to put paid to their hopes of defending their title on Sunday. Brandon King (5), Alex Hales (15), Steven Taylor (4), Sharmarh Brooks (1) all failed to deliver as only three batsmen made double figures. The only respectable contribution came from 34 year old Pakistani all rounder Imad Wasim who made 43 not out to ensure the Tallawahs reached 100 runs. Amazon Warriors captain Imran Taahir showed his tactical nous as all of his Guyanese bowlers picked up wickets to ensure Tallawahs were never in the contest.
Guyana Amazon Warriors will be contesting in their sixth Republic Bank CPL final on Sunday where they take on Trinbago Knight Riders in search of their first ever title having lost the final in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019. (JC)
