The Rotary Club of Barbados West will be donating over 6 000 books to 29 Primary and Secondary Schools across the island over the course of the coming weeks.
In an attempt to continue their support of basic education and increased literacy for all children in schools in Barbados, the organisation will be providing these books at the cost of approximately USD $100 000 to supplement existing libraries or provide the foundation for new libraries.
President Gale Reeves said: “It is our hope that the donated books will enrich and enhance general school libraries, as well as individual classroom libraries. At its conclusion, the Club anticipates donating approximately 7 000 children’s books to multiple schools islandwide.”
The books are from a range of genres and subject areas, non-fiction and fiction. They were sorted in age categories: five to seven years old, eight to ten years old and eleven years old and over.
This donation follows of their most recent work, a donation of approximately 1 300 books valued at over $40 000 to four recipients as part of the International Literacy Day celebration on September 8.
