Gun crime up

ACTING COMMISSIONER of Police Tyrone Griffith has found a most unusual ally in his fight against the proliferation of illegal guns on Barbados’ streets – the youth of New Orleans, a district he has described as one of his most challenging.

During a Press conference at Police Headquarters yesterday, Griffith conceded that illegal guns were entering the island through ports of entry, possibly with the cooperation of officials at these facilities, and finding themselves in the hands of criminals.

“Our intelligence suggests that they are coming through legitimate ports of entry. They are either assisted by officials or not detected by them at our borders,” the top cop said.

“This is an untenable situation which has to be addressed if we [are] to stem the inflow of these weapons . . . .”
