LAWYERS IN BARBADOS will get a chance to sharpen their knowledge in various areas of practice at the 17th Commonwealth Law Conference in India next year.Advocate in the Supreme Court of India, R. Santhan Krishnan, who was accompanied by president of the Caribbean Bar Association, Wilfred Abrahams, in an interview with the MIDWEEK NATION last week, visited Barbados to whip up support for the biennial event, which is scheduled for February, 5 to 9, 2011, in Hyderabad, India.Krishnan said the theme of the 2011 conference was Emerging Economies And The Rule Of Law, Challenges And Opportunities and the four streams of legal topics to be discussed were the rule of law and human rights, commercial and corporate law, the profession of law and current legal issues.“It is continual education. It is an opportunity for lawyers to develop themselves in their area of speciality by choosing from a series of related seminars. “And this helps to keep acquainted with developments in the rest of the Commonwealth, because what they do affects us as well . . . and it increases your network of support and also help develop your jurisprudence by having a wider pool of resources from which you can pull,” Abrahams said.Krishnan said 1500 people were expected at next February’s event and Acting Chief Justice of Barbados, Justice Frederick Waterman, and president of the Barbados Bar Association, Leslie Haynes, were among those officially invited by him.The Advocate pointed out that the conference also concentrated on the relationship between the three organs of the state, judiciary, legislature and the executive, and “during the course of interaction everybody learns from each other and this works towards a better understanding and relationship between the three organs of the state”.
