Trinidad women win opener

PORT-OF-SPAIN – Hosts Trinidad and Tobago made a strong start to the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup defeating Chile 2-1 in Sunday’s opening matches.
Playing at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, the Soca Princesses got on the scoresheet as early as the ninth minute through Diarra Simmons. Trinidad clung to that one-goal lead before Liana Hinds put them further ahead in the 80th minute.
Iona Rothfeld replied three minutes later for Chile.
Earlier, Nigeria came from behind to edge the defending champions Korea DPR 3-2. A Ngozi Okobi brace in the third and 79th minute and Francisca Ordega also scored in the 77th. Korea’s Kim Su Gyong scored in the 28th minute and Kim Kum Jong in the 58th to give them the 2-0 lead.
However, the biggest victory of the day went to Germany who trounced Mexico 9-0 at the Dwight Yorke Stadium.
The goals came early and often for Germany, with two players getting hat-tricks. Lena Petermann scored in the 12th, 13th and 72nd minutes, while Kyra Malinowski scored her three in the second half. Lena Lotzen scored a brace and Kristin Demann added the other.
South Korea beat South Africa 3-1 in the other match. (CMC/SAT)
