The Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) and the management of regional airline LIAT are on a collision course.
BWU?general secretary Sir Roy Trotman yesterday served notice on LIAT’s CEO Brian Challenger of intention to institute industrial action in response to the reported locking out of LIAT employees from the Barbados office unless an “apology and corrective action” were offered before a Friday, August 12 deadline.
In the letter to Challenger, Sir Roy referred to a meeting between the BWU and a delegation of LIAT representatives held at the BWU’s office on July 28, and stated: “Our two sides were, BWU thought, discussing how we could resolve a local LIAT issue without doing violence to the national tripartite social compact we have in this country, Barbados.”
Sir Roy said an agreement had been reached between the two parties at that meeting to have a follow-up meeting, and he reminded Challenger of an understanding with LIAT that “there was to be no status change while those discussions were being held”.
