Eye on nursing homes

THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH intends to beef up inspection of all private and public nursing homes in Barbados.
Noting that the ministry had a “duty” to license and inspect facilities and investigate complaints regarding the quality and care of the facilities, Minister of Health Donville Inniss said it was an area that needed to be strengthened.
He said it would necessitate a restructuring of the elderly care services to bring all the Government-owned care facilities under one management.
“We are currently spending $40 million per year of the Ministry of Health budget on elderly care facilities and direct services, including $6 million per year of the alternative care of the elderly programme. (YB)
