Goals win football matches, not fancy plays!
Host team Christ Church South emphatically sent that message to visitors St Philip South, when the teams clashed in the David Thompson Memorial Constituency Council’s Classic at Dover on Wednesday.
After being outplayed in the first half, Christ Church South blanked the Philippians 3-0 through strikes by Wesley Alleyne (49th) and Christopher Harris (53rd). Damien Bayne of St Philip South scored an own goal in the 66th minute, deflecting a shot by Daquan Marshall past his custodian.
In the opening match, St Michael West defeated St Michael South 2 -1.
After a goalless first half Dario Haynes scored for St Michael West in the 60th minute but Ryan Lucas replied in the 65th for St Michael South.
Veteran Wayne Sobers got the winner with a lovely free-kick, which slipped through the opponents’ wall and settled in the far corner in the 85th.
In the first game of a double header at Hilda Skeene, Christ Church East defeated St George North 3-0 with first half goals by Romario Griffith (21st) and Renako Moseley (24th). Kemar Ward added the third in the 49th minute.
St James Central swept aside home team St Philip North 4-1 in the second match with goals from Ayola Cyrus (33rd), Zaeehaeus Polius (53rd), Hayden Holligan (73rd) and Stefon Cumberbatch (80th).
At Speightstown, St. James South went down to St Joseph 3-0 as Michael Young (22nd), Adrian Mayers (48th) and Raymond Kellman (53rd) were on target for the winners.
In the night capper, St Peter and St Michael South Central drew 1-1. Damien Edwards scored for St Peter and Jabber Greene replied for St Michael South Central.
At Belfield, St Philip West beat Christ Church West 2-1, while in the second game, St Michael East defeated St Michael West Central 4-2.
Bryan Neblett had a brace, while Troy Dickson and Ryan Bayley also hit the nets for St Michael East.
St Michael West Central replied late in the game with goals from the in-form Henderson Richards and Renel Smith.
The tournament continues tonight with double headers at Combermere School and Weymouth “B”.
