PNP ready to debate

KINGSTON – The main opposition People’s National Party (PNP) Friday dismissed critics who claim that Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller is being shielded from participating in the national debates.
The debates are being organized by the Jamaica Debates Commission which says there is no agreement about the number, venues, topics or format of debates.
Some newspaper writers have said that Simpson Miller is afraid of participating in the debates, which they said would allow the voters to have a better gauge of the two leaders.
But in a statement, the PNP said that the claims were erroneous and that Simpson Miller, a former prime minister,  was willing and able to debate any member of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
“The PNP states categorically that the Leader of the Opposition is prepared to participate fully in a national debate. Having served as Prime Minister, Minister of Government and ably represented the country in various local and internal fora.
“Mrs Simpson Miller is capable and willing to debate any member of the governing Jamaica Labour Party,” the release said. (CMC)
