The martial arts skill a 22-year-old university student learned at secondary school was put to good use last Friday when he valiantly fought off three attackers at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI).
The young man’s father told the DAILY?NATION yesterday that his son, though stunned by the sudden attack, bravely fought back when three men pounced upon him and tried to grab a chain from around his neck.
“He was walking along the construction site when a man ran out at him and tried to push him down. He hit the man in his face and he fell and then two other men ran out, he kicked one to the ground and the other tried to grab his chain. He hit him in the back of the head and the two men ran off. The first man who attacked him came at him again and tried to grab his chain and pull at his pocket. My son hit him to the ground and he ran off too.
“He was very traumatized because he did not expect something like that to happen to him on campus. The university needs to improve its security and the lighting,” the father added.
When contacted, Oral Reid, head of security at the campus, said management there was doing everything possible to improve security and took a “very dim view” of such criminal attacks perpetrated on students.
