More than 1 200 illegal extensions built over the years on to National Housing Corporation (NHC) units are about to become legal under special legislation.
This is as a result of the NHC (Transfer of Terrace Units) Bill 2012 which was debated in the House of Assembly yesterday, after being introduced by minister of Housing and Lands Michael Lashley.
Giving a detailed exposition on the number of hitherto illegal extensions across Barbados, Lashley said these had in fact led to the development of small businesses, spawned recreational areas, built community spirit and turned a number of unemployed people into small entrepreneurs.
“What must we do? What was the solution?” asked Lashley.
“This legislation, along with the Tenantries Development Act and other pieces of social legislation, will impact on the lives of many Barbadians, especially the working class in Eden Lodge, the Pine, Ivy, Black Rock, Bayville, Six Roads and so on. It is economic enfranchisement.”
