HEALING HERBS: Campaigning for cabbage

The ecstatic people were singing, “He died that we might be forgiven/ He died to make us good/that we might go at last to heaven/saved by his precious blood.”
Meanwhile, in the far distance, the leader of the The People’s Health and Well-being Party (PHWP) could be heard introducing silent doctor Ms Bounteous Cabbage as the new candidate for the villagers in Fustic. The two other candidates, eddoes and corn, were previously introduced through this column.
The candidates were extremely excited because the PHWP was leading in the poll done by Peter. One of the party supporters could be heard shouting, “Peter poll does always be right.”
When the party leader finally introduced cabbage, decked out in her green frilly dress, the crowd screamed in frenzy.
Over in Surgery Road, members of the opposing party – the Grease, Unholistic and Unhealthy Party (GUUP) – were busy trying to get their campaign on the road.
The candidates were so unhealthy that they were unable to produce a manifesto which addressed good health. Additionally, house-to-house canvassing was curtailed because they were always out of breath. Shame on that party!
Therefore, this week we will go on the campaign trail with committed cabbage. Her slogan is “Cabbage now, cabbage forever”.
“Research has revealed that I,  cabbage, am a miracle silent doctor and a household name in Barbados.
“All cabbages are loaded with nutrients, including vitamin C, K, B1 and 6, manganese, molybdenum, potassium and calcium.
“The mighty cabbage can prevent or heal the following health challenges: constipation, obesity, headache, jaundice, scurvy, arthritis, gout, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, coughs, colds, depression, eczema, stomach ulcers and loss of appetite, among others.
“Cabbage is also an excellent antioxidant and will assist in maintaining a good immune system. It can also purify the blood and repair wear and tear of the body.
“Antioxidants in cabbage will help protect the skin from free-radical damage known to cause signs of ageing.
“Additionally, cabbage has cholesterol-lowering and cancer-prevention benefits. It can also relieve muscle soreness.
“Consuming cabbage can prevent skin hardening and decolorization, cataracts, and also protects against age-related macular degeneration.
“Those afflicted by inflammation can also use cabbage for relief.
Finally, please vote for queen cabbage. Cabbage will serve you well. Health and wealth should also go hand-in-hand.
“Also, ensure that your kitchen garden is loaded with organically grown cabbage.”
Next week, I will introduce you to all the candidates from the dismal GUUP party.
