Prepare for an?active hurricane season.
Director of the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) Judy Thomas sounded this warning yesterday saying that residents should prepare homes and businesses against flooding and strong winds.
Following a meeting of the Standing Committee for Public Education and Information at the department’s Warrens office, Thomas said that Barbados was comfortable up to a Category 1 hurricane, but anything over or above would cause tremendous stress “and we are nowhere ready for a Category 3 or 4”.
The Acting Deputy Director of the Barbados Meteorological Services, Sonia Nurse who was present, said the season which starts June 1, was forecast to be above normal, with an expectation of 18 main systems, nine of which will become hurricanes and four may become major hurricanes. (AH)
