13 Bajan medals after second day

BARBADOS had 13 medals, including two gold, and were sixth overall after the second day of the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships (CCCAN) in Costa Rica.
Barbadian swimmers also won seven silver and four bronze medals. They reached 166 points with Aruba in first position on 179.5 points.
Luis Sebastian Weekes won gold in the boys’ 11 to 12 breaststroke over 100 metres with a time of 1 minute 15.62 seconds. Daniel Jacobs of Aruba was second in 1:16.19 and Sean-Douglas Gooden of Jamaica third with 1:17.29.
Damon St Prix had the distinction of winning the first gold medal, clocking 26.91 seconds in the 11-12 boys’ 50 metre freestyle. Anthony Useche of Venezuela took the silver in 27.18 and bronze went to Honduras’ Sixto Hernandez in 27.32.
On the second day of competition, St Prix also won silver in the 400m free in 4:29.55 and Weekes the bronze in 4:35.95. Useche won gold in 4:28.52.
St Prix, Weekes, Jack Kirby and Talma won silver in the 4×100m freestyle relay in 4:13.75. Venezuela were in a different class, a full nine seconds ahead, while Costa Rico were third in 4:14.58.
It was the second silver for the quartet who did 4:39.78 in the medley relay, again behind Venezuela (4:37.73).
Lani Cabrera (2:09.94) was beaten by El Salvador’s Pamela Benitez (2:07.92) in the race for gold in the girls’ 18-and-over 200m freestyle. Samantha Rahael of Trinidad and Tobago was third in 2:13.41.
The final medal on the day went to Zabrina Holder who took bronze in the 100m butterfly for girls’ 15 to 17 in 1:06.01.
On the opening day, Sariyah Sherry was second in the 13 to 14 girls’ 50m freestyle in 27.94.
Cabrera was also second in the 800m free in 9:21.97 behind Benitez (9:12.01) and Hannah Gill won bronze in the 800m freestyle for 13 to 14 girls, clocking 9:32.96.
Barbados also picked up two medals in the 11 to 12 boys’ 100m backstroke. Kirby was second (1:08.61) and St Prix (1:10.06) third, while Sebastian Davila of Venezuela took gold in 1:06.64. (SAT)
