CARACAS – Jamaica lost to Dominican Republic 60-78 in their opening second round game of the FIBA Americas Championship in the Poliedro de Caracas yesterday.
The Jamaicans were unable to contain a better organized Dominican Republic, who trailed 11-17, 29-42 and 45-57 at the end of the first three sessions.
Jamaica’s point guard Akeem Scott beat opponents en route to easy layups and hammered in several long-range jumpers to score 21 points, while Feldeine James led the Dominican Republic with 22.
The JamrockerZ, as the Jamaican team is called, eliminated Brazil two days ago, continue a hectic series of second round games with a clash against 2011 Americas winners Argentina today before facing Mexico tomorrow and hosts Venezuela a day later.
Based on the FIBA points system, which awards one point for a loss and two for a victory, Jamaica, who took a bonus three from the first round, now have four.
Dominican Republic entered the second round with four points and move up to six.
The four semi-finalists will advance to the basketball World Cup next year in Spain. (CMC)
