BARBADIANS MAY soon have another option for their healthcare needs.
The American University of Barbados, which outgrew the Wildey, St Michael campus and has relocated to Lands Downs, Silver Sands, Christ Church, is to be the site of the new medical clinic.
Chief executive officer and founder of the university, Dr Gary Barr, said the clinic was the fulfilment of a promise to the Government of Barbados and would provide diverse treatments and medicines free of cost.
With a roll of about 50 students from Barbados and the region, North America and Africa, Barr said he expected the university to plug $2 million into the local economy on an annual basis.
During his remarks, Minister of Education Ronald Jones pledged to use his office to increase the numbers at the university. His recruitment drive will start as early as next month, when a delegation from the Nigerian government will be in Barbados to tour educational facilities. Jones said the American University of Barbados would be on that list.
“We want to see this institution grow. It is the first . . . . We will see the American University of Barbados as our boy child so we will love it and do whatever is necessary to assist in its development,” he added.
Minister of Health John Boyce said the people who lived in the environs would be happy that the property, formerly the Lighthouse Resort, was brought to “effective use”.
