Sheep breeding boost likely

Barbados may be a few months away from an enhanced artificial insemination programme involving local Black Belly Sheep.

Expert in the field of artificial insemination, Dr Raymundo Rangel, a professor at Chapingo University in Mexico, said both the quality and the framework was already here so it should be a simple matter to begin the process.

“Once you have high-quality animals like the ones you have here in Barbados, you can get high genetic merit, females and males, and you can apply some of the reproductive technologies we already know to be able to multiply those numbers.

“With artificial insemination, you can serve several hundred or even thousands of ewes, which can have a great impact for the sheep industry in Barbados, the Caribbean and the world,” he said.
