THE HEAD of the Barbados Bar Association has stoutly defended the reputation of lawyers, saying the numbers who play the system are fewer than thought and the judicial system would be better if judges listened to the recommendations of attorneys.

President Tariq Khan was a guest on Brass Tacks Sunday and was speaking on the legal profession yesterday.

Along with head of the BBA’s disciplinary committee, Marguerite Woodstock-Riley, QC, he fielded questions about the length of time it took to investigate matters lodged before the disciplinary committee, the delays in the judicial system and lawyers whom callers claimed were deliberately frustrating cases.

Khan said more than 2 500 cases were filed with the Registry of the Supreme Court on an annual basis and these included matters alleging breach of contract, those of a commercial nature and those dealing with estate matters, in addition to others. (HLE)
