ENGLAND’S TEST tour of the Caribbean earlier this year wasn’t just about bat and ball but big bucks.
The more than 15 000 English visitors contributed significantly to just over $100 million being spent by spectators during the three-match cricket series against the West Indies, which was the main chunk of the overall gross expenditure of almost $150 million.
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), in a Press release yesterday, said that an economic impact assessment conducted during the April 13 to May 3 matches, revealed that “gross expenditure related to the tour was approximately US$73.2 million”.
The board noted that the lion’s share of this impact was driven by the spectators’ spending of US$50.1 million. All told, there were 15 660 visitors, including 3 150 who booked tour packages.
