GOING FOR GOLD.

That’s the name of the new instant scratch ticket game that was officially launched yesterday at the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) to provide financial help to athletes in their preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The game is a joint partnership between the Barbados Lottery and the Barbados Olympic Association and all of the beneficiaries of the lottery will benefit from it. Those beneficiaries are the BOA, the Barbados Turf Club, the National Sports Council and the Barbados Cricket Association.

The game’s primary purpose is to provide a lump sum payment of $50 000 to the BOA in July 2016. That lump sum is to help shore up the finances of the BOA after it has divided up funds to Olympic hopefuls to aid in their preparations for the Games.

BOA president Steve Stoute lauded the initiative by the Barbados Lottery and pointed out that its support over the years has helped to bring about a new generation of world class athletes.

“With the advent of the lottery in 1996, we immediately saw a vast improvement in our performance in international games. There was a period from 1975 to 1993 where Barbados did not win a single Pan American or Commonwealth medal, to being able to win medals at every major multisport competition from 1997,” said Stoute.

Dentonia Brewster, site operations manager at the Barbados Lottery, said the new scratch  ticket game was all part of their commitment to sport, youth and culture. (PG)
