Hornby stuns Moseley in thriller

IT SURE didn’t take long for Richard Hornby to send his message.

The selection committee may already have something to think about for next season after Hornby bounced back from early breaks in each set to stun Davis Cup veteran Russell Moseley in yesterday’s Group 1 opener of the Top 8 invitational.

Playing at the National Tennis Centre in front of the de facto Davis Cup selectors, including captain Kevin Yarde, the New Zealand-born baseliner held on to win 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-4 in a three-hour marathon thriller.

This was after Moseley held two set points in the first set and even went up a break in the third and deciding set for a quick 1-0 lead.

Hornby managed to bounce back every time, and the third set was no different as the University of West Florida student benefited from a series of unforced errors to break right back.

And he threatened to run away with the set after Moseley hit a couple of groundstrokes long to fall behind 3-1.

However, Hornby misfired on a couple of his own forehands while struggling with the swirling winds before dumping a needless drop-shot into the net to hand Moseley back the break.

It was the cleanest of matches played considering the two men traded breaks once again while slapping errors long and wide in a litany of unforced errors.

Moseley hit two forehands long again to fall behind 0-40, while serving to stay in the match. He managed to save two match points with big serves before missing an easy volley to hand Hornby the match.

There wasn’t much of a contest in the other featured match as Bajan No.2 Haydn Lewis obliterated Davis Cup teammate Seanon Williams 6-1, 6-2 in their Group 2 opener.

The match was even more lopsided than the final score suggested considering Lewis never once faced break point and was only extended to deuce in one of his service games.

Matthew Hutchinson then blitzed Matthew Foster-Estwick 6-0, 6-1 in the other Group 2 game while Hornby’s younger brother Adams downed Xavier Lawrence 7-6 (2), 6-1.
