Banks: Bajans borrowing again

COMMERCIAL BANKS and other private financiers are feeling the joy of a bumper Christmas season, as Barbadians regain their appetite for borrowing.

And it’s not just a case of Bajans acquiring funds to spruce up their homes for the holidays and buy gifts. One senior banker reported “a big uptick” in the demand for mortgages in recent weeks, while another finance house said there was a 32 per cent jump in small business loans “this season”.

First Citizens Bank’s chief executive officer Glyne Harrison told the SUNDAY SUN that what he was seeing this Christmas was “a good signal for the market that confidence is returning and the economy is picking up”.
