As part of the Nation Publishing Company’s 50th anniversary of Independence celebrations, the Weekend Nation team will visit communities across the country that reflect Bajan life. We will talk to people and explore places over the next few editions.

ONE LOOK AT Everton Hunte’s front yard will tell you how much he loves Barbados.

He has a makeshift lawn ornament in the shape of the island – which he said even had some of the hills in the right places – a wishing well and a palm tree, all decorated in blue, yellow and black and proudly displayed for all to see.

The WEEKEND NATION took a trip out to Hunte’s Ruby Park, St Philip home to capture the sight and hear his story. The former Ministry of Agriculture worker said it started as a happy coincidence – or maybe something more.

“I’m trained in agriculture so I do my own landscaping, though I’m in the process of redesigning. I roam the area to make sure there is nothing around which holds water to breed mosquitoes and I also used to mow a stretch of grass past a former open lot.

Please read the full story in today’s Weekend Nation, or in the eNATION edition.
