Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave has always been into farming and agriculture.
Yesterday, he got another opportunity for a hands-on approach, judging a feisty set of bulls and heifers under a year old in the dairy, beef breed and beef heifers at Agrofest 2016 at Queen’s Park.
Sir Elliott joined chief executive officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society, James Paul, and Jerry Thomas as Sir Elliott’s advisor on what the criterion involved for the judging of the bulls.Â
Lady Belgrave, much to the delight of patrons, toured the aviary with the many different birds such as African grey parrots, cockatoos, pigeons, macaws and a lone magnificent peacock.
After the tour of the aviary, she toured the grounds of Agrofest patronising plant and vegetable stalls with her entourage before heading back to join Sir Elliott for the judging competition.
When the competition ended, Sir Elliott and Lady Belgrave joined officials of the event in a tour to view the many animals housed in their pens on the grounds.
One young farmer, seven-year-old Isaiah Marshall, much to his delight, was given the opportunity to show off his pigs.
He regaled the Governor General with tales of the official’s recent visit to his school, St Alban’s Primary, and showed that in addition to his farming talent, he could sing rendering part of the Ashgrove which he and the school choir had delivered to Sir Elliott on his visit.
