ALLEYNE HOUSE (Blue) ran roughshod over the competition yesterday as they easily won the Alleyne School’s annual inter-house athletics championships at the National Stadium.
Led by joint victor ludorum Leandre Walker, Alleyne House gained 1 006 points – the only house to break the 1 000-point barrier.
Defending champions Read House (Yellow) were a distant second with 873 points, while Haynes House (Red) were third with 852 points. Cumberbatch House (Green) finished fourth with 736 points.
Walker and Read House’s Delano Wickham – both under-17 athletes – ended the day with 70 points each. Walker was especially impressive in the 400 metres, which he won in a new record time of 51.24 seconds. Walker also won the long jump, javelin, 800 metres and 400 metres while placing second in the high jump and the 200 metres.
Wickham picked up his points by winning the discus, high jump, 200 metres and 100 metres and finishing second in the long jump and 800 metres. His run in the 200 metres was one that sent the fans crazy because he just narrowly missed out on the record.
He won that event in 22.83 seconds, short of the old record of 22.60 seconds. Walker was second in 22.89 seconds while Shaquan Glasgow was third in 23.46 seconds.
Last year’s victrix ludorum, Shemia Odaine, repeated that feat again this year as she ended as the top girl with 62 points. Odaine of Haynes House set a new record of 58.83 seconds in the Under-17 Girls’ 400 metres and her time of 25.97 seconds in the 200 metres was just outside the school record of 25.60 seconds.
She also won the long jump, high jump, 400 metres and 200 metres, finished second in the shot put and the 800 metres and third in the javelin.
Odaine also led Haynes House to an emphatic victory in the Under-17 Girls’ 4×100 metre relay. She was already a step ahead of the athlete from Cumberbatch House but stretched that lead to about 20 metres by the time she crossed the line first in 55.58 seconds. Cumberbatch was second in 57.32 seconds while Alleyne was third in 60.86 seconds.
A number of other athletes showed good form such as Kuron Griffith, who clocked 22.74 to win the Under-20 Boys’ 200 metres.
Christian Shurland won the Under-15 Girls’ 200 metres in 28.20 seconds, while Akil Howell prevailed in the boys’ race, clocking 26.40 seconds.
At last year’s Powerade Barbados Secondary School Athletics Championship, Alleyne School finished 12th in the girls and 10th in the boys.
