‘Go republic’ on Heroes Day

That’s the view of historian Trevor Marshall, who has suggested that much of the period leading up to that change be used to undertake an islandwide public education campaign on why the country should move to a parliamentary republican form of government.

Marshall, a retired head of the History Department at the Barbados Community College, also feels that at the same time, local government should be reintroduced, especially given the failure of the statutory corporations, which were set up to undertake certain functions outside of central government.

“We should consider becoming a republic next year; both political parties are in favour. The draft constitution should be made known and next April on Heroes Day the new system can be instituted,” he said.
