Row over remake

THE REMAKE of a popular 1970s ballad has led to a claim of copyright infringement. But one of the singers has rejected the claim.

Last Friday, entertainers “Smokey” Burke, Colin Spencer and Ian Webster, along with the executive producer the National Cultural Foundation (NCF), launched the cd for the remake of the Bajan classic Barbados My Island Of Dreams.

However, veteran entertainer Richard Stoute, though pleased about the latest renewed interest in local classics, has complained that his late brother Mike Wilkinson, who he claimed wrote, arranged and produced the track, was not acknowledged.

Stoute, founder of the long-running Richard Stoute Teen Talent Competition, said Wilkinson, who died in 2012, was a pioneer in music in Barbados and his memory deserved to be respected. He was also the island’s first calypso monarch in 1960. (SDB Media)
