Baby taken into care
THE LAST THREE NIGHTS have been sleepless for 22-year-old Latoya Maynard. The young mother is afraid that if she goes to sleep, she will wake and not find her three-week-old son Kevin by her side.
Maynard and her boyfriend Mohanan Gomes, 34, are faced with the painful prospect of their newborn son spending the next six months in the custody of the Child Care Board, while they “find somewhere suitable . . . to live”.
Gomes’ Lodge Road, Christ Church home has been deemed inappropriate, while Maynard lives in Beulah, St Philip, with her mother and grandmother but said the latter did not want her to bring the baby there.
Speaking to the WEEKEND NATION from the lobby of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) yesterday, Maynard and Gomes pleaded for urgent assistance in finding somewhere to live as Maynard, who lost custody of her first-born son three years ago, did not want to be separated from another child.
Maynard charged that on Wednesday, while under duress, she signed documents giving the Child Care Board authority to take Kevin into its custody. (LK)
