UWI BLACKBIRDS ‘A’ edged the previously undefeated Guardian General Pride of Villa 50-49 to end the first round of the Barbados Netball Association’s Division 1 competition unbeaten and with a maximum 25 points on Wednesday night at the Netball Stadium.

The knockout queens were led by a superb 42 goals from 46 attempts by national shooter Shonica Wharton in holding off opponents who up to last season floundered at the bottom of the Division 1 pool.

Villa had launched their 2016 league season with upset wins over former champions C.O. Williams Rangers and Pine Hill Dairy St Barnabas.

Both Villa and Blackbirds began the game at a fast pace, which was enjoyed by the largest crowd to watch the league season to date. (KB)
