THE BARBADOS UNION OF TEACHERS (BUT) may be seeking legal recourse on behalf of members whose pay was recently docked.

President Pedro Shepherd hinted at this before going into a meeting with the acting permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education, June Chandler, yesterday afternoon at the ministry’s Elsie Payne Complex.

The union is demanding that the letters, which spoke of deductions and were signed by Chandler and circulated to members who attended meetings called by the union on April 29 and May 4, be withdrawn.

Members discovered late last week that their salaries were in fact docked. It is understood that primary school teachers lost a full day’s pay for the two meetings combined, and their counterparts in the secondary schools lost two full days’ pay. In some instances, the deduction was close to $350. (YB)
