RED TAPE standing in the way of hoteliers seeking to take full advantage of full concessions granted under the amended Tourism Development Act is causing frustration for some in the tourism sector.
The act, passed two years ago, provides for hotels to be granted an exemption from duties and taxes for the purchase or importation of supplies, including food stores, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
However, in his address to the annual general meeting of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association recently, outgoing chairman Sunil Chatrani said though the list of exempted items had since been extended, and in spite of the fact that the law had provided for all consumables to be available for all hotels, “we are still some way off to making that a reality”.
