THE PATHOLOGIST who examined the body of 12-year-old Shemar Weekes could not say if the boy was assisted or if anyone was present at the time of his death.

Dr S N Persad Kadiyala concluded that Shemar died from asphyxia due to hanging. He said there was nothing to suggest the manner of death was not suicide. The ligature marks did not show deep grooving, indicating that Shemar was suspended for a short duration, according to the consultant. shamar-weekes

During the post-mortem on June 1, 2015, the examiner noted there were ligature marks around the back of the neck and on the Adam’s Apple. There were scrapes and bruises on Shemar’s knees, legs and ankles but those were simple and could have occurred during play.

Toxicologist Patrick Best said that blood samples from the boy tested negative for cocaine, cannabis, opiates, antidepressants and several other drugs. (AC)
