WHILE GOVERNMENT remains under an International Monetary Fund-backed programme, a senior minister has publicly slammed the very same agency and some of its policies.

Complaining that there is too much belly-aching and begging mentality in the region, Minister of Education Ronald Jones appeared to blame the agency for encouraging policies that negatively affect social services in countries.

Jones, whose ministry has overseen the institution of a tuition fee policy for Barbadians studying at the University of the West Indies, suggested that education is often a casualty of such programmes.

“Our children in school suffer because somehow they don’t recognise that we have to educate our people regardless. So we’re told to attack our social services, our education. We’re told to trim our so-called free health systems, cut back and all of it is to pay back those who have raped this region,” he said heatedly. (WILLCOMM)
