THE RECENT THEFT of 18 pigs from a St Lucy farmer has left a bitter taste in the mouths of those in the farming community.
The thieves, who moved in while the owner was out of the island, left him out of pocket by about $10 000 as the pigs were ready for market. Residents recalled seeing a truck with a trailer loaded with pigs leaving the area.
Manager of the Barbados Pig Farmers’ Cooperative Society, Jennifer Waithe, described it as a terrible situation.
“This doesn’t only happen around Christmas but it happens all the time, especially with our local cows,” she said. “But it is a lot more prevalent around this time.” (MR)
