PORT AU PRINCE – The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has released preliminary figures of the January 29 legislative and local government elections giving the party headed by President-elect Jovenel Moise and its allies a majority of the seats in the Senate.
The CEP warned though that the final results of the elections “will be available after the challenge period and the handling of possible cases”.
The Council said it was investigation why some votes had not yet been tabulated and according to Robenson Cherilus, the Director of the Voting Tabulation Centre, acts of vandalism on Voting Centres could be the cause.
Moise, will be sworn into office on February 7, one year after Michel Martelly left office without an elected successor. The results polls of the January 29 polls give Haiti a full Parliament following the electoral marathon that lasted almost two years.
According to the preliminary results released late Friday, Moise’s PHTK party won four of the eight senatorial seats, with party allies winning three.
The coalition lost in the Ouest department, which includes Port-au-Prince and represents some 40 per cent of the Haitian electorate. The PHTK candidate, Fednel Monchery, came out on top during the first round of that battle, but ultimately lost to Patrice Dumont, a popular former sports journalist.
Meanwhile, a number of Presidents have confirmed their attendance at Tuesday’s inauguration of the new leader of this Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.
The authorities said that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Danilo Medina of the Dominican Republic, Ecuador’s head of state, Raphael Corea and Trinidad and Tobago’s President Anthony Carmona have already confirmed their presence at the investiture ceremony.
The authorities said that at least 60 invitations have been sent to Heads of State and governments having diplomatic relations with Haiti to participate in the investiture
“We are waiting for further confirmations,” said Lucien Jura, the spokesman of the Joint Commission on the handover of powers, pointing out that other countries responded through their diplomatic missions like Mexico, France, Taiwan, the Bahamas and Antigua and Barbuda. (CMC)
