BLP St John candidate eyeing upset

THE SYMPATHY VOTE which might have led to Mara Thompson winning the St John by-election and her seat in the last general election has dissipated, claims her rival.

Barbados Labour Party (BLP) candidate Charles Griffith said he was making inroads in the constituency as people were very frustrated.

“Especially among the young people in St John there is a feel-good on my part. They are not really tainted by the past so they are thinking for themselves in terms of where they want to see St John go,” he said.

Griffith, who was speaking at the branch meeting of St Joseph MP Dale Marshall in Horse Hill last Sunday, told the gathering: “It is a case where that love affair is no longer there; the sympathy vote that was there before has passed. We are seeing a change and I am flowing on that tide of change. Hopefully, it will swing into a positive come election time.”

Thompson beat the last BLP candidate Hudson Griffith by 2 931 votes.

Charles Griffith, a youth officer in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for over 20 years, admitted his job might seem to be a mammoth task but he was not backing down because the reality was that the parish needed representation.

Both he and Marshall spoke of the deplorable condition of the roads in both their constituencies.

Marshall said St John would be one of the seats the BLP would have to fight hard for. (LK)
