Category 1 hurricane shelters open

NINETEEN CATEGORY ONE hurricane shelters have been opened for Barbadian residents who want to ride out the passage of Tropical Storm Harvey.

However, disaster officials are advising people to seek shelter with family first.

Deputy chief education officer Joy Adamson announced the list of shelters during an update from the National Emergency Operations Centre at Warrens, St Michael.

The shelters in Christ Church are Blackman & Gollop Primary, Christ Church Foundation School, Gordon Walters Primary at St Patrick’s and St Christopher Primary School.

Other shelters are Hilda Skeene Primary in St Philip; Queen’s College in St James; Coleridge and Parry School and Roland Edwards Primary in St Peter; Combermere School, Ellerslie School and George Lamming in St Michael; The Lester Vaughan School in St Thomas; Cuthbert Moore Primary in St George and Hillaby Turner’s Hall primary in St Andrew.

Gordon Greenidge Primary is undergoing repairs and not available.

There are five private shelters open. These are the Six Roads Church of Christ and Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church in St Philip; the Black Rock SDA Church; Dalkeith Methodist Church in St Michael and Connell Pentecostal House of Prayer in St Lucy.

Shelters in bold also have wheelchair access.

Category 2 shelters would only be opened after the storm.

Earlier tonight, Kemar Saffrey of the Barbados Vagrants and Homeless Society expressed concern about shelter for more than 100 homeless people during an interview with Starcom Network.

Barbadians have been advised to stay indoors and monitor updates from official sources. (SAT)
