‘Pause’ republic talk

Former Attorney General Dale Marshall says he will not be distracted by any resurrection of talk of Barbados becoming a republic.

The Opposition Barbados Labour Party parliamentary representative for St Joseph said yesterday the debate was nothing but an “empty gesture”.

His position came after Minister of Education Ronald Jones raised the issue earlier this month and called for a serious discussion on Barbados moving in the direction of a republic.

A call also was made by a pro-republic group of distinguished Barbadians – Sir Stephen Emtage, Sir Woodville Marshall, Ian Archer, Patrick Frost and Peter Laurie – through a letter in yesterday’s SUNDAY SUN which supported the removal of the Queen of England as Barbados’ Head of State.

“We therefore call on all political parties to announce, before the date of our next general election, that they would support a constitutional amendment designed to ensure that our Head of State must be a citizen of Barbados who shall reside among us in Barbados,” noted the endorsers of the letter. (SDB Media)
