On Tuesday the Clara Lionel Foundation donated $120 000 to six learning institutions.

Justine Lucas, executive director of the charity founded by superstar Rihanna, said the initiative was part of their Barbados Micro Grants programme aimed at assisting various schools to create the best learning environment for their students to excel.

The ceremony took place at Radisson Aquatica Resort, Aquatic Gap, St Michael. Cheques of $20 000 each were presented to Combermere School, St Paul’s Primary, Westbury Primary, Charles F. Broome Memorial, Operation Triple Threat Performing Arts Academy and The St Michael School.

Principal of Westbury, Rosalyn Gittens, said the proceeds would go a long way in providing meals for her students.

“We are very grateful for the donations at Westbury because we have a breakfast programme for about 46 students.

Director and founder of Operation Triple Threat, Janelle Headley, said the money would go towards the school’s performing arts programmes, while principal of St Paul’s, Sandra Small-Thompson, said the science and innovation initiative would get a boost. The donation to The St Michael School would go towards a literacy scheme.

Lucas said these schools were selected as she believed the Micro Grant programme would have a great impact there. (SB)
