ST JOHN’S – Former Pakistan spin maestro, Mushtaq Ahmed will spend four weeks in the Caribbean from May 10 to June 7 to work with the current squads training.

CWI approached Mushtaq to get involved in the high-performance programme, with him agreeing to come initially for a four-week stint. During this time, he will spend time with all our high-performance squads – International, ‘A’ team and Women’s. His time in the region fits perfectly with all the squads training for their respective tours.

His arrival ties in with the on-going high-performance programme “where we want to provide the best coaches for our players” according to CWI Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams.

Adams continued that, “Although this initial stint is four weeks both parties are already discussing the possibility of engaging Ahmed on a more regular basis in the future, not only to work with our players but just as importantly with our coaches in the region.”

Nine technical coaches are currently contracted by CWI for the major teams, the Windies Senior Men’s, Windies Senior Women’s and the Windies ‘A’ Teams, who will all shadow Ahmed during his session.

Adams, who is delighted with the selection, said, “I am pleased to welcome Mushtaq Ahmed into the Caribbean and look forward to his upcoming period with our elite squads. Mushtaq comes with a wealth of experience, having worked for a long time with elite level spinners and I am sure he will add value to our High-Performance programmes. I am hopeful that we can engage Mushtaq beyond this initial four-week period and have him here in the West Indies on a more consistent basis sharing his expertise with both players and coaches across the region.”

Ahmed has successfully worked with international and fringe players in both Pakistan and the UK and is recognised as a top-quality spin bowling coach. (PR)
