Cricket West Indies (CWI) is asking Barbadians to pack the stands at Kensington Oval for the Caribbean’s first day/night Test match next month.

The ground, widely acknowledged as the ‘mecca’ of cricket in the Caribbean, will host the contest between West Indies and Sri Lanka from June 23 to 27 and CWI chief executive officer Johnny Grave said yesterday there was no better venue to mark the historic occasion.

“We have successfully staged day/night, first-class matches over the last few seasons in the Regional 4-Day Tournament and we are thrilled to now be hosting the first day/night Test ever in the Caribbean, as a way to offer our fans a different experience and a chance to be part of the game,” Grave said in a media release.

“It could not have been played in a better venue than the iconic Kensington Oval and it will be an extra special occasion, as the match starts on the 90th anniversary of the first ever Test in the Caribbean which was also played there.

“We know Barbadians are renowned for their love of the game and we hope that they will come out in their numbers and pack the stands, but we also urge Windies fans from around the region and, indeed, the world, to come and make this a truly special occasion.”

The match at Kensington, the third and final Test of the series following games at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad from June 6 to 10 and the Daren Sammy Stadium in St Lucia from June 14 to 18, will be the tenth day/night Test since the first was staged in 2015.

CWI also announced the itinerary for a series against Bangladesh that will comprise two Tests, three One-Day Internationals and two Twenty20 Internationals and will run from June 28 to August 5.

Two of the Twenty20 Internationals will be played at Central Broward Regional Park in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Grave described it as a “wonderful opportunity to further establish the Windies brand in North America”.

“This is one of the initiatives outlined in our new strategic plan for the period 2018 to 2023,” the CEO said.

“Our intention is to work with ICC Americas members, USA Cricket & Cricket Canada in partnership to establish cricket as a popular sport from North to South America, create opportunities for West Indian fans to watch the team live, and build support for the Windies.” (HG)
